For the last 6 months I have had the pleasure of refining my digital marketing skills as part of the Be Digital Springboard programme in Northumberland.
Whilst prior to the programme I was a digital whizz with Adobe, able to kern type into perfect legibility like a ninja and who, like anyone else who simply grew up with it – patiently endures parent Skype calls that mostly involve the words ‘can you hear me’ as and ‘yes, I can see you too’.
Post Be Digital training, I have learned that being digital in terms of marketing yourself online isn’t something scary and mysterious. Although it was pretty intense, lots of brand soul searching, business analysis and some serious brain power, as I start to implement a new digital marketing strategy I felt excited rather than overwhelmed.
If I could give away one top tip from all the work over the last 6 months it would be this: Rather than digital being about how much information you can re-tweet or how swiftly you can put a website together, make it about yourself whether that self is you as your brand, or your brand as a personality in its own right.
The last 6 months have enabled me as the founder of my brand to take a step back, to actually be pushed to spend as much time thinking about own brand and marketing as I would do for my clients. I think the empathetic nature of designers is we don’t really like looking inwards at ourselves. I know I much prefer when I can channel my creativity into solving a problem for someone else and put myself in their shoes. It’s pretty tough to have to analyse yourself and take a challenge to walk in your own shoes for 6 months. I am extremely grateful to Pascal Fintoni, Norma Foster and my mentor Leon Howe as well as Anita Nicholson for encouraging me to do this. I know that the One Line brand will grow stronger as a result and what’s more so will the brands we’re building for our clients.
